Designed by architects Héctor Mestre and Manuel de la Colina and finished in 1968 at around 100 metres high (112 with the antenna), the building works as a central switching hub rather than a public office – the kind of place that quietly makes everyone else’s conversations possible. Teléfonos de México is woven so tightly into the country’s urban story that in Guadalajara a whole Telmex central was famously slid 12 metres sideways in 1950, with operators still inside, just to widen a main avenue without cutting phone service – so this concrete tower is part brutalist sculpture, part reminder of how far cities will go to keep us talking.
